SUMMARY:(Un)Natural Language: An Art Software Identifies Potential Ecologi
 cal Threats in Documents
DESCRIPTION:Peijing Mou (University of California Los Angeles)\n\nThis pap
er introduces (Un)Natural Language, an artistic computational system that
examines how words shape ecological narratives, detecting potential ecolog
ical threats in government water-related project documents. Weaving togeth
er machine learning, environmental activism, and linguistics, the system o
ffers a new analytical lens for interpreting public documents, uncovering
hidden narratives of economic expansion and extractivism. Through a custom
-labeled dataset and a fine-tuned BERT model, it reveals and visualizes pa
tterns of pro-growth and ecologically detrimental discourse. Developed int
o an interactive online archive and installation series, the project recla
ims computation as a space for reflection rather than control—inviting vie
wers to rethink the language shaping our ecological futures.\n\nRegistrati
