Prof. Tomohiro Tanikawa received the B.E., M.E., and Ph.D. degrees in engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1997, 1999, and 2002, respectively. After working as a researcher at the Telecommunications Advancement Organization of Japan (later NICT), he joined the University of Tokyo, where he has held several academic positions. Since 2024, he has been Professor at the Social ICT Research Center. His research focuses on realism in VR/MR, including image-based rendering and multisensory presentation technologies. Recently, his work has expanded to societal applications such as digital museums using MR, behavior-inducing techniques based on life-logging, and emotion-centered avatar communication.
