Biography
Prof Johnny Golding holds the Chair in Philosophy and Fine Art at the Royal College of Art (RCA), London. Golding's research re-imagines 21st-century material culture at the intersection of contemporary art, philosophy and the wild sciences, with emphasis on entanglement, time-shelters and the sticky cohesions of human⇌interspecies⇌machine generative co-evolution. Head of Radical Matter Research with Dr Jonathan Boyd, the proto-Centre engages post-Enlightenment knowledge systems via multisensory/multimodal experimental poetics, sonic landscapes, synthetic embodiments of 'aliveness' and the chemo-tactile curiosities of the common octopus. Golding has received generous support from HK AiDesignLab (2021-2025) on two labs producing a non-bias multimodal asset, Polymorph, and an AI game/toolkit WeatherSpores (with Tom Simmons). Significant support was also received from the Austrian Science Fund (PEEK-FWF), as co-Principal with Dr Martin Reinhart (Angewandte) for Data Loam (2022) and Radical Matter (2020-present). Senior Tutor: Painting, emphasis on the sensualities of mark-making, surfaces and the critical importance of attunement.
