Ikumi Noborio

Biography
Ikumi Noborio is a Kyoto-based researcher with a background in architecture, traditional construction methods, and digital fabrication. He earned a Master of Engineering from Kyoto Institute of Technology, where he studied the integration of digital technologies with traditional building practices. Currently, he is a Project Researcher at the KYOTO Design Lab, Kyoto Institute of Technology, focusing on the preservation and transmission of Japanese plastering techniques. His work develops robotic systems capable of replicating plasterers’ movements, combining motion capture, surface recognition, and computational modeling. Noborio’s research bridges architectural robotics, digital fabrication, and cultural heritage, seeking methodologies to formalize tacit skills into digital frameworks. He has presented his work at academic conferences, including the Architectural Institute of Japan and the RCAE International Conference, where he has contributed studies on the application of robotics and computational methods to craft preservation. His ongoing work aims to establish new foundations for skill inheritance in architecture.
