Tom Simmons

Biography
Tom Simmons is a sound artist and researcher. His work addresses the politics and aesthetics of sound and storytelling. He leads the Royal College of Art's Digital Direction programme, which foregrounds research and learning in critical and equitable storytelling with technologies including AI and XR. His research into AI and real-world storytelling with Professor Johnny Golding as part of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Royal College of Art AI in Design Laboratory, investigates more than human and interspecies intelligence, ecology, encounter and emergence, critically rethinking immersive generative AI through art-led practice. He is co-investigator for the EPSRC UK Ecological Citizens network, linking digital storytelling, design, materials, environmental and citizen science with communities to support positive climate action. He co-leads the Royal College of Art's Immersive Acts research group, which explores how diverse perspectives and intelligences can be combined with immersive experiences to reframe responses to planetary and societal concerns.
